5 reasons why you should get your placenta encapsulated

It took me until my fourth child to get my placenta encapsulated. I had never heard of doing anything with my placenta besides letting the doctors do what they wanted with it. I never realized it was an option for me to take it even though my body created it.

Knowing what I do now, I wish I would’ve done it with all 4 of my kids!

If you’re unfamiliar with the process read on.

First the placenta is taken by the doula or placenta encapsulation specialist unless you are processing your own placenta.

Placenta specialist is then dubbed in full PPE to process the placenta.

They inspect it for any abnormalities and make note if it seems like some placenta may be missing to let the mom know as this could mean she could have a piece of retained placenta which requires further attention.

The placenta is cleaned and a print is taken, umbilical cord is made into a keepsake, placenta is then sliced and dehydrated, placed into a grinder then popped into the pills.

Now for the 5 reasons to encapsulate your placenta:

1. Increased Energy

It can be so exhausting to be up at all hours of the night but it has been said that ingesting your placenta can help because of the iron in it. When you give birth whether it’s a C-section or vaginal birth, you lose blood which depletes your iron stores and can make you sluggish or even sleepier than you already are caring for a newborn.

2. Increased Milk Supply

Progesterone is a key hormone in encouraging your body to make milk. It’s stressful enough worrying about your baby getting enough milk and this sets you out in the right direction. In a study of 210 mothers, 86% of moms reported a good or very good milk supply after ingesting their placenta.

3. Avoid Baby Blues

They can ease or help you avoid postnatal mood disorders. They have even been called “happy pills” due to their mood boosting power! The placenta can boost oxytocin levels and if you don’t already know oxytocin is considered the love hormone.

4. Encourages Your Uterus to Shrink

When you’re pregnant your uterus expands to accommodate your baby. After baby is born the uterus is gradually contracting itself back down to size. The oxytocin from your placenta actually nudges your uterus to contract and return to its normal size quicker.

5. You Don’t Get a Redo

Depending on how many kids you plan on having you may only have 1 chance to experience these beautiful benefits from your glorious placenta made. It’s worth trying so you can have a smoother transition into your postpartum period.

Check out your local placenta encapsulation specialist for prices and different packages they have to offer.

If ingesting it sounds like it’s not your thing then you can still reap benefits by having it turned into a salve, tincture or keepsake, you can even have the specialist prepare it and then you use the powder as soil to plant a tree or plant.

The options are numerous! If you can’t find a local specialist then find one that ships.

Good luck and cheers to you for planning on having a great start to your postpartum!👩🏽‍🍼
